Finding Toxin-Free Laundry Products

August 23, 2021

Laundry is a super simple part of everyone’s routine! You place a pod or liquid detergent in the washer with your clothes and that’s it! However, next time you do your laundry, you may want to check the label of your detergent. Detergents can be packed with artificial fragrances and harsh chemicals that lead to skin irritation and allergic reactions. These harsh chemicals can also be bad for the environment. So how can you effectively clean your clothes while still using a safe detergent?

The labels for detergents are often hard to read. Many popular brands have found ways to avoid listing harmful ingredients that aren’t safe for the skin. Fragrance is considered to be a trade secret, so many formulas are proprietary and the individual ingredients do not need to be listed. Fragrances can be made up of many ingredients that may be allergic and toxic to the nervous and respiratory systems. The best trick to avoid these chemicals is to seek out a fragrance-free detergent. If you’d still like a scent to be on your clothes, try adding your favorite essential oil to dryer balls for an added scent!

In terms of the environment, avoid phosphates and petrochemicals in detergents. Phosphates are not biodegradable and cause pollution in natural bodies of water. Phosphates in detergents are currently illegal in the United States so it’s unlikely you would run across one, but it’s better to check for them just in case. Petrochemicals are a lot more common in detergent fragrances. These chemicals, derived from fossil fuels, are bad for both your skin and the environment.

Essentially, it’s best to look for detergent that contains both biodegradable ingredients and lacks fragrances and dyes. Sometimes, a product fitting this description is difficult to find, but here are my personal favorites.

Molly’s Suds

Molly’s suds contains only four simple ingredients, is gentle on skin, and works hard to get your clothes clean. The powder detergent is eco-friendly and people-safe. For those suffering from allergies or just want a full non-toxic wash, this detergent is perfect.

Pardo Naturals Laundry Detergent

This detergent powder contains baking soda, castile soap, and washing soda. It’s a super simple formula that’s perfect for those with sensitive skin and allergies. They even offer formulas infused with essential oils for those who would prefer a safe fragrance.

Seventh Generation’s formula is both plant- and mineral-based. This makes this detergent perfect for both your skin and the environment. It has been tested by dermatologists for skin safety, and the company designed this product in particular to make everyday cleaning more sustainable.

This detergent is both biodegradable and hypoallergenic. While it does contain a mild fragrance, the formula is plant-based and cost-effective at the drug store.
